- Tubulin is a protein that is a basic building block that is encoded to form microtubules.
- Also to note are the [[microtubule-associated proteins]] (also used for microtubule formation)
## kinds of tubulin
There are several kinds of tubulin employed in microtubule formation:
- Alpha Tubulin
- Beta Tubulin
- Gamma Tubulin
However, *alpha*- and *beta-tubulin* are used for building the filament, whilst *gamma-tubulin* is used for microtubule filament creation. Gamma-tubulin is not a part of the filament, as it is the starting point for the other two types of tubulin dimers to assemble onto.
